Mineral Oil and Skin

Are You Aware of the Damaging Effects of Mineral Oil on Your Skin?

Mineral OilWhat is Mineral Oil?

Mineral oil is a bi-product of distilling gasoline from crude oil. After the distilling process is over, mineral oil is the leftover liquid.

Because of its abundance, it is very inexpensive to use, making it an ingredient of choice for many manufacturers.

Mineral oil is also odorless and tasteless and is also called white oil.

Before synthetic oils were invented, mineral oil was used as a mechanical lubricant, and for thousands of years it has been used as a sealing and building material. More recently it has been used as an ingredient for pesticides and engine oils.

What Products Is Mineral Oil Used In?

It is a common ingredient in:

  • Lotions
  • Creams
  • Mineral Oil in baby care productsBaby Care Products – washes, lotions, soaps
  • Baby Oil – this is 100% Mineral Oil with fragrance added
  • Petroleum Jelly
  • Skin Care Products – Moisturizers
  • Anti-aging Products
  • Cosmetics

What are the risks of using products that contain Mineral Oil?

  • Mineral Oil forms a thin layer on the skin. Because it is difficult for the skin to absorb, it has a tendancy to clog the pores which makes it difficult for the skin to expel toxins.
    • Once the oil is absorbed by the skin the oil coats part of the small intestine where it absorbs all of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E & K. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies.
  • Irritated SkinAccording to the Cosmetic Safety Database, mineral oil is associated with cancer, allergies, and irritation of skin, eyes or lungs. It has also been linked to acne.
  • Mineral oil attracts the moisture from deep skin cells which slows cell renewal.
    • When this happens collagen breaks down, connective tissues are destroyed, slowing down skin cell renewal, thus causing premature aging.
    • It has been said that it’s harder on your skin than the sun.

Many people are re-evaluating what they use on their skin, and especially what they are using on their baby’s skin.  You have to wonder why you would put products made from the distillation of crude oil on your body.
